What is a CPM and why is it used?
Continuous Passive Motion is a post-operative therapy that moves a joint passively through a prescribed range of motion for a prescribed period of time. While passive motion is a common therapy modality, continuous passive motion requires a device to attain the continuous motion requirements needed to gain the benefits of CPM.
Some of the proven benefits of CPM are:
•Prevention of Immobilization Disease
◦Adhesion Formation
◦Joint Contractures
◦Degeneration of Articular Cartilage
◦Degeneration of Periarticular Cartilage
•Improved Joint Nutrition
◦Enhanced Delivery of oxygen and nutrients
◦Improved circulation of synovial fluid to joint surfaces
•Remodeling of Joint Surfaces
◦Wolfs Law – Healing tissue will be laid down in a pattern dictated by the stresses imposed upon it, collagen fiber is less randomized and more structured
◦Stimulation of stem cells to produce cartilage cells
•Faster ROM gain
•Faster resorption / reduction of swelling conditions
•Decreased need for pain medication
•Greater compliance to active & strengthening rehabilitation programs
