What is a CPM and why is it used?

CPM stands for Continuous Passive Motion. Passive Motion is the movement of your injured joint through range of motion without the active use of your muscles to do so. That is why it is called passive. Your therapist utilizes passive motion when he or she moves your affected joint for you as the first “warm-up” of your joint tissues before beginning active motion exercises, strengthening, or dexterity programs when you visit rehabilitation therapy. Without passive motion you cannot attain the goals of active motion.

A CPM machine is simply a device that helps to move your joint through a prescribed range of motion for a prescribed length of time. It is generally prescribed for home use to move that joint passively for you to enhance the healing process and to maintain the therapy gains you and your therapist attained during your therapy visits. It also keeps your joint “warmed up” so that you are more comfortable doing your Home Therapy exercises given to you by your therapist.

The proven benefits to you are:

  • Decreased pain and increased comfort with a lessened need for pain medications.
  • Decreased time for wound and soft tissue healing.
  • Enhances your use of rehab time – faster progress to active motion.
  • Faster return to normal daily activity
